Branches are the places in the instructions where multiple paths can be possible and one of the path (in branch) will be followed. This can be understood as conditional executions like If - Else conditions, Switch cases etc. Without branch prediction, the processor becomes slow, processing less number of instructions and taking more clock cycles. The processor has to stall without executing any instructions and wasting lot of clock cycles.  Without branch predictor the instructions that have to be next executed doesn't know.
