Project: testing operating systems
now that you have been introduced to the purpose and function of a computer operating system, it is time to test out several different types. the windows, mac os, and linux operating systems all provide the same services to computers, in a similar fashion. yet they are not interchangeable. programs designed to work well on one operating system may not work as well—or may not work at all—on another operating system. so you need to learn more about these systems by using them.

working in pairs (if you are able to), find at least three different computers with three different operating systems. ideally, this would include one version each of windows, mac os, and linux. however, if you cannot find a computer using linux, use two versions of either windows (for example, vista and xp) or mac os (for example, mountain lion – 10.8 and snow leopard – 10.6).
conduct a test by performing the same operations on each computer, such as searching for a file, installing a program, and analyzing the directory and file structure. if you are working in a team, each of you should perform at least one operation and perform the same operation on each computer. for example, if you install a word processing program on a windows machine, you should also install a word processing program on a mac machine, and your teammate will do something like examine the directory structure on both machines.

create a table illustrating the differences in how the operations you tested are performed on each os. for example, did you use different commands or menus? were you able to quickly find the file or understand how to perform the operation? how did the different systems respond to the same command? if you worked in a team, also note differences between your individual experiences.

do some research online, in the library, or by talking to your school’s computer support team to learn how the kernels for windows, mac os, and linux are different. you may split up the research if you are working in a team. with your teammate, prepare an 8–to 10-minute presentation based on your hands-on experience and your research. discuss the major differences between the operating systems and your opinions about which kernel provides the best os environment for general use personal computers.

you may use any presentation medium you prefer—powerpoint, a podcast, an online slide show, etc. if you create a graphic presentation (such as powerpoint) and are not able to give a presentation in class, include your notes with the slides so your teacher can see your talking points.
