Imagine that you are a video game designer and need to come up with a concept for a new game. Think about what type of game you would design. What would the story be? What type of action would the player experience? What types of characters will be in the game? After you figure out what type of game you could create, you will develop a game design document. Complete this template, and upload it for your instructor to grade. (Please be sure that you are saving this file as a .doc or .docx so that it can be uploaded successfully.) After you have given this some thought, you can use this plan to create your document.

Make a list of story ideas. Think about how each story could be made into a game. Remember, it should be complex enough to be interesting but not so complex that it is confusing.
Select one idea and develop it into a more detailed story.
Summarize your story in two to four sentences. This will become your “Core Statement.”
Write a few paragraphs that describe the events in your story. This should go in “The Story” section of your plan.
Decide on the details and describe them. This would include what your navigation would look like, art, music, sound, characters, and more. This will be very detailed. You will place this in the “Design Specifics” section of your plan.
Look at your story and your core statement. Think about how you are going to accomplish your goals. You will need to describe each event that will take place. For example, if the main character will navigate through different rooms to find clues and the rooms include the library, study, kitchen, ballroom, and dining room, then you may start with a description like this. “Mr. Red will enter the library through the door or through the portal. In the library there will be walls covered with books and Mr. Red will be given a hint and instructions on how to find the clue. The clue will be hidden in a yellow box on the library shelf. Once Mr. Red finds the clue, he may exit the room through the portal or door.” You will have a series of descriptions like this. These descriptions will go in the “Features List” section.
Think about what is needed in each scene. What characters will participate? What props will be needed? How will the player navigate in and out of the room? How will the score be displayed? These items and more will go into the “Table of Contents” section of your plan.
Finally, take a moment to review your plan to be sure that you have not left out any important details. A game developer should be able to take your game design plan and create the game. This is meant to be a good start. If you were to continue to work on developing the game, you would add more details to the game design document.
