Yes.  If you want to go WAY back to the beginning, when George Eastman
and his Eastman Kodak company introduced the Brownie camera and roll
film in Rochester, New York, the way it worked was:  When you bought
the camera, it came loaded with film.  It was too complicated a job for
people to change the film themselves.  When the film was all used up,
you would take the camera into the shop, and there, for a price, the
technicians would take the film out and install new film, then develop
(process) the used film and prepare prints for you.

Next time you fire off 30 or 40 photos and a few selfies with your
smartphone during recess or lunch, remember that roll film used to
come in rolls of 24 or 36 shots, and you had to take the camera in
to the shop to change the film when it got used up.  That would last
most people a month or more.
