Bar (1) has length, l1 = 2.50 m, and bar (2) l2 = 0.65 m. before deformation, a gap of  = 3.5 mm exists between the rigid plate at point b and bar (2). a) after we apply load p to the rigid plate at b, the rigid plate will move to the right to stretch bar (1) and compress bar (2) (note: the gap will close). if we calculate the normal strain in bar (1) as 2,740 m/m after the load p is applied. determine the normal strain produced in bar (2). b) concept question: let’s say we want to control the environmental temperature surrounding these bars to return to a gap of 3.5 mm after load p is applied. assume that you know the coefficients of thermal expansion, , for both bar (1) and bar (2). would you have to increase or decrease the environmental temperature to return to the original gap length? explain your response.
