As we learned in thermodynamics, heat engines run most effectively at higher temperature differences. the maximum temperature in the turbine unit operation is often limited by the turbine blade material. to keep turbine blades from melting, coolants like air or water or some other fluid are used within the blades and within the rotating base to remove heat from the blades. in this case, an iconel turbine blade has a length of 50 mm, a conductivity of 20 w/m∙k, a cross sectional area of 0.0006 m2, and a perimeter of 110 mm. the blade tip can be assumed to be adiabatic. the gas stream flowing over the blades has a temperature of 1200°c and a convection coefficient of 250 w/m2∙k. if the coolant can keep the base temperature of the blade at 300°c, will the blades stay at temperatures below 1050°c, the melting temperature of iconel?
