The human circulatory system consists of a complex branching pipe network ranging in diameter from
the aorta (largest) to the capillaries (smallest). the average diameter and the number of these vessels are
shown in the table. does the average blood velocity increase, decrease, or remain constant as it travels
from the aorta to the capillaries?

vesselaverage diameter [mm]number
aorta25.01
arteries4.0159
arterioles0.061.4*10^7
capillaries0.0122.9*10^9
this is an excercise that requires application of conservation of mass.

all the "m" are mass flow rate, p is density, n is number of vessels, a is area

m [kg/s]=m_aorta=m_arteries=n*p*v_avg *a_vessel

v(volume flow rate) [m^3/s]=m/p=v_avg*a

blood can be considered incompressible; that is, the density does not change as the blood moves from large vessesl to small vessels. assume the density of blood is equal to 1060 kg/m^3.

Air is to be cooled in the evaporator section of a refrigerator by passing it over a bank of 0.8-cm-outer-diameter and 0.4-m-long tubes inside which the refrigerant is evaporating at -20°c. air approaches the tube bank in the normal direction at 0°c and 1 atm with a mean velocity of 4 m/s. the tubes are arranged in-line with longitudinal and transverse pitches of sl- st 1.5 cm. there are 30 rows in the flow direction with 15 tubes in each row. determine (a) the refrigeration capacity of this system and (b) pressure drop across the tube bank. evaluate the air properties at an assumed mean temperature of -5°c and 1 atm. is this a good assumption?
