In fully-developed laminar pipe flow, consider the rate of work done on an annulus of thickness dr (hint: consider, for each face of the annulus, rate of work = power = force × velocity).

(i) Find an expression for the power (per unit volume) dissipated by the flow in the fluid annulus, and show that it is equal to µ(du/dr)

(ii) By using u(r) from 3(ii) above, and integrating this expression, show that the power dissipated across a length of pipe is Q∆P

True or false (explain) (110)[111] is a slip system in bcc metals . the {111} family in fcc contains 8 planes. resolved shear stress (rss) in single crystals is just related to the applied stress. critical resolved shear stress (crss) in single crystal metals is direct proportional to the number of defects in the structure

An inventor claims to have developed a reversed heat engine (ie. a heat pump) which is able to deliver 10 kj heat into the room at 20°c from outside ambient temperature of -10°c by consuming only 2 kj electricity in winter. this claim is a)-impossible b)-possible only if the heat pump is ideal c)-practically possible d)-unable to be assessed as it depends on the working fluid used in the heat pump.
