When a compressed gas storage tank fails, the resultant explosion occurs so rapidly that the gas cloud can be considered adiabatic and assumed to not mix appreciably with the surrounding atmosphere. Consider the failure of a 2.5-m3 air storage tank initially at 15 bar. Atmospheric pressure is 1 bar, CP  7R/2. Provide an estimate by assuming reversibility.
a) Calculate the work done on the atmosphere. Does the reversibility approximation over-estimate or under-estimate the actual work?

b) A detonation of 1 kg of TNT releases about 4.5 MJ of work. Calculate the equivilent mass of TNT that performs the same work as in part (a).

Refrigerant 134a enters an insulated compressor operating at steady state as saturated vapor at -26°c with a volumetric flow rate of 0.18 m3/s. refrigerant exits at 9 bar, 70°c. changes in kinetic and potential energy from inlet to exit can be ignored. determine the volumetric flow rate at the exit, in m3/s, and the compressor power, in kw.

At steady state, air at 200 kpa, 325 k, and mass flow rate of 0.5 kg/s enters an insulated duct having differing inlet and exit cross-sectional areas. the inlet cross-sectional area is 6 cm2. at the duct exit, the pressure of the air is 100 kpa and the velocity is 250 m/s. neglecting potential energy effects and modeling air as an 1.008 kj/kg k, determine ideal gas with constant cp = (a) the velocity of the air at the inlet, in m/s. (b) the temperature of the air at the exit, in k. (c) the exit cross-sectional area, in cm2
