Carry out a rudimentary design of a small modular nuclear reactor which delivers 100 MWe (megawatt electric). The reactor is based on a Rankine cycle where the steam is expanded in a turbine from 12.5 MPa and 350o C to 5 kPA. Assuming that the electric generator is 98% efficient. The actual cycle achieves 90% of the efficiency of the corresponding ideal cycle. 90% of the fission energy goes to coolant (Gf =180 Mev/fission). Find (a) If the reactor uses the uranium as the fuel and the enrichment is 3% of U-235. What mass of fuel rod (UO2) is consumed each year ? (b) What is the flow rate of steam in kg/s required when the reactor is running at full power ? Note : Assume that the BW γ is the same for the real and ideal cycles and the pump has an efficiency of 90%.

Two flowing streams of argon gas are adiabatically mixed to form a single flow/stream. one stream is 1.5 kg/s at 400 kpa and 200 c while the second stream is 2kg/s at 500 kpa and 100 ? . it is stated that the exit state of the mixed single flow of argon gas is 150 c and 300 kpa. assuming there is no work output or input during the mixing process, does this process violate either the first or the second law or both? explain and state all your assumptions.
