Einstein contemplated the fate of the universe, but at the time, it was not known that the universe is expanding. He assumed that the universe was static, or constant in size with time. If the view at the time was correct and there was no Big Bang, and subsequently no expansion of the universe, what must have been true for the universe to have been static?
