It is proposed to install a heat pump to heat a Lifeboat Station by harvesting the energy available from a nearby beach. The Lifeboat station requires heating to keep the stored equipment dry and serviceable at an ambient station temperature of 25°C. The average temperature of the beach at the heat source installation depth of 2 metres is 5°C and the minimum temperature difference between the refrigerant and both the heat source (Beach) and the heat sink location (Lifeboat Station) is 5°C.

Assume the following operating conditions

• The Refrigerant used is 134a.
• The heat pump compressor process is 100% Isentropic.
• The refrigerant enters the compressor as a dry saturated vapour.
• No under cooling occurs at the condenser outlet.

i) Draw a fully annotated plant layout and plot the cycle on the relevant pressure-enthalpy chart marking on the chart the following:
a. The processes involved
b. Where the energy transfers occur and their direction

True or false (explain) (110)[111] is a slip system in bcc metals . the {111} family in fcc contains 8 planes. resolved shear stress (rss) in single crystals is just related to the applied stress. critical resolved shear stress (crss) in single crystal metals is direct proportional to the number of defects in the structure

Along 8-cm diameter steam pipe whose external surface temperature is 900c connects two buildings. the pipe is exposed to ambient air at 70c with a wind speed of 50 km/hr blowing across the pipe. determine the heat loss from the pipe per unit length. (b) air at 500c enters a section of a rectangular duct (15 cm x 20 cm) at an average velocity of 7 m/s. if the walls of the duct are maintained at 100c. a) the length of the tube for an exit temperature of the air to be 40 0c. b)the rate of heat transfer from the air. c) the fan power needed to overcome the pressure drop in this section of the duct.
