Given: A solar collector has a transparent cover with the following spectral transmissivity: 0um to 0.4um (0), 0.4um to 1.7um (0.9), 1.7um to 2.2um (0.7), 2.2um to infinity (0) Solar radiation is incident at a rate of 1000 W/m2 . The absorber plate of the solar collector can be considered optically black. The absorber plate is kept at a constant temperature of 60 degrees Celsius using water cooling from the opposite side. Assume the Plexiglas cover to be at the same temperature of 60 degrees Celsius. Assume the temperature of the surface of the sun to be 5800K. Find: (a) List ALL assumptions. (b) The overall transmissivity for solar radiation and the solar radiation flux incident on the absorber plate (in W/m2 ). (c) The overall transmissivity of the glass cover for radiation emitted by the absorber plat. (d) The rate of heat transfer to the absorber plate cooling water if the glass cover temperature is the same as the absorber plate temperature (in W/m2 ). (e) Assume the Plexiglass cover to be removed. It is a cloudless night and the absorber plate radiates to the depth of deep space which we assume to be 3K. What rate of electrical heat transfer to the absorber plate would be required to maintain the absorber plate at 20 degrees Celsius (in W/m2 )?
