Once extracted, the slate taken from the quarry will be carried away on a barge. The dimensions of the barge are, length 18m width 6.5m depth 3.8m When the barge is empty it floats at a depth of 0.7m
Health and safety requires that the upper edge of the barge must be 0.4 above the water.
Water density assumed as 1000kg/m3 (kg/m cubed)

Q1a) what would be the maximum mass of slate that the barge could safely carry to ensure that the health and safety requirements are met.
My answer I got was 81900kg

Q1b) at what level should the maximum fill line be painted around the inside of the barge to ensure that the health and safety requirements are met. If the slate has a given density of 2700kg/m3 (kg/m cubed)
