Consider a cylindrical nuclear fuel rod of length and diameter that is encased in a concentric tube. Pressurized water flows through the annular region between the rod and the tube at a rate , and the outer surface of the tube is well insulated. Heat generation occurs within the fuel rod, and the volumetric generation rate is known to vary sinusoidally with distance along the rod. That is, is a constant. A uniform convection coefficient h may be assumed to exist between the surface of the rod and the water (a) Obtain expressions for the local heat flux q'(x) and the total heat transfer q from the fuel rod to the water. (b) Obtain an expression for the variation of the mean temperature Tm(x) of the water with distance along the tube (c) Obtain an expression for the variation of the rod surface temperature Ts(x)with distance along the tube. Develop an expression for the x-location at which this temperature is maximized.

Apiping systems consists of 6 m of 6-std type k and 12 m of 4-std type k, both drawn copper tubing. the system conveys ethylene glycol at a rate of 0.013 m3/s. the pressure drop across the system is to be calculated. there are two 90ยฐ elbows in the 6-in pipe, a reduction from the 6-in pipe to the 4-in pipe and four 90ยฐ elbows in the 4-in pipe. all fittings are soldered (same as flanged) and regular. the inlet and outlet of the system are at the same height.

Tom is having a problem with his washing machine. he notices that the machine vibrates violently at a frequency of 1500 rpm due to an unknown rotating unbalance. the machine is mounted on 4 springs each having a stiffness of 10 kn/m. tom wishes to add an undamped vibration absorber attached by a spring under the machine the machine working frequency ranges between 800 rpm to 2000 rpm and its total mass while loaded is assumed to be 80 kg. a) what should be the mass of the absorber added to the machine so that the natural frequency falls outside the working range? b) after a first trial of an absorber using a mass of 35 kg, the amplitude of the oscillation was found to be 10 cm. what is the value of the rotating unbalance? c) using me-3.5 kg.m, find the optimal absorber (by minimizing its mass). what would be the amplitude of the oscillation of the absorber?
