The first step in inflammation is for immune cells (leukocytes) to roll to a stop on the inside of the blood vessel wall near the site to be inflamed. This is accomplished by molecules of E-selectin, which are produced by and incorporated into the endothelial cells lining the blood vessel wall, binding to molecules of sialyl-Lewis(x), which are produced by and incorporated into the leukocytes. Dr. Dan Hammer (of the Univ. of Pennsylvania) and his students have produced glass beads to which they have covalently bound sialyl-Lewis(x). They flow these between a microscope slide and cover glass. E-selectin has been covalently conjugated to the microscope slide. They then flow the glass beads over the microscope slide at various flow rates and measure the relative numbers of free-flowing, rolling, and stopped beads. Imagine it is your first day in his lab as a student researcher, and Dr. Hammer asks that, instead of reporting your data in terms of flow rate, report your data in terms of shear rate at the surface of the microscope slide. [See diagram below for a representation of the physical set-up of the device] (a) Write the appropriate momentum balance (shell balance for momentum) with all important terms. Write all applicable boundary conditions.
(b) Let the flow rate (Q) be 10 ml/min (= 1.67x10-7 m3/s), and solve for the shear stress at the bottom surface. Use information from the diagram and the viscosity of water at room temperature to fill in numerical values for all of the other parameters. [Hint: Q ? v A because v = f(z)]
(c) Estimate the inlet pressure necessary to achieve the flow rate Q. Make sure to account for frictional losses in your estimation

A3-mm-thick panel of aluminum alloy (k 177 w/m-k, c 875 j/kg-k and ? = 2770 kg/m) is finished on both sides with an epoxy coating that must be cured at or above t,-150°c for at least 5 min. the production line for the curing operation involves two steps: (1) heating in a large oven with air at ts,0-175°c and a convection coefficient of h, 40 w/m2. k, and (2) cooling in a large chamber with air at 25°c and a con- vection coefficient of he 10 w/m2.k. the heating portion of the process is conducted over a time interval te which exceeds the ime required to reach 150°c by 5 min (h = r + 300 s). the coating has an emissivity of ? = 0.8, and the temperatures of the oven and chamber walls are 175 and 25°c, respectively. if the panel is placed in the oven at an initial temperature of 25°c and removed from the chamber at a safe-to-touch tempera ture of 37°c, what is the total elapsed time for the two-step curing operation?

Apiping systems consists of 6 m of 6-std type k and 12 m of 4-std type k, both drawn copper tubing. the system conveys ethylene glycol at a rate of 0.013 m3/s. the pressure drop across the system is to be calculated. there are two 90° elbows in the 6-in pipe, a reduction from the 6-in pipe to the 4-in pipe and four 90° elbows in the 4-in pipe. all fittings are soldered (same as flanged) and regular. the inlet and outlet of the system are at the same height.

Air at a pressure of 1atm and a temperature of 40 c is in parallel flow over the top surface of a flat plate that is heated to a uniform temperature of 120 c. the plate has a length of 0.40m (in the flow direction) and a width of 0.15m. the reynolds number based on the plate length is 50, 000. what is the rate of heat transfer from the plate to the air? if the free stream velocity of the air is doubled and the pressure is increased to 10 atm what is the rate of heat transfer?
