Tasks Task 1 - Calculate the induced direct stress, strain and dimensional
change in a component subjected to direct uniaxial loading
and the sher stress and strain in a component subjected to
shear loading
The following figure shows a shackle joint subjected to a ensile load. The connecting
rods, A and B, are made from steel and the pin C is made from brass. Young's
modulus is 210 GPa for steel and 100 GPa for brass. The shear modulus is 140 GPa
for steel and 70 GPa for brass. The smallest diameter of the connecting rods A and
B is 25 mm and the diameter of the pin C is 20 mm.

a) Calculate the maximum direct stress in the connecting rods.
b) Calcualte the maximum direct strain in the connecting rods.
c) Calculate the change in length of a 500 mm length of the connecting rod.
d) Calculate the shear stress in the pin.
