A small can containing compressed air at sufficiently high pressure can be used to reinflate a flat car tire. If the initial temperature of both the compressed air and the air in the tire is 70 F, estimate the initial pressure in the compressed air can necessary to reinflate one tire from 0 psig (14.7 psia) to 23 psig (37.7 psia). Also, estimate the final air temperature in the tire and in the can. Assume the following: a) Air is an ideal gas with CV=5.014 BTU/lb-mol Rankine (R=1.99 BTU/lb-mol Rankine).
b) The tire does not change size or shape during the inflation process.
c) The inner tube of the tire has a volume of 1.5 ft3.
d) The compressed air can has a volume of 0.022 ft3.
e) The can is disconnected from the tire as soon as the pressure in the tire is the same as that in the can. Since this happens rapidly relative to thermal equilibration, assume that the air in the can expands adiabatically and reversibly (i. e., the air that remains in the can does not transfer a significant amount heat to the air in the tire and the can is well-insulated from the outside environment).
