In 2018-19 academic year, an energy inventory and analysis indicated that approximately 190,000 MWh of electricity was consumed on the main VT campus. This included the self-generation by the on-campus power plant (25,000 MWh consumed from the self-generation) and the remainder purchased from the local utility. Assume that both of these values are measured at the campus buildings/facilities, after the transmission loss, to simplify the analysis. (Tons = Short tons = 2000 lbs) 1. Calculate the amount of primary or input energy (MWh) required for the electricity purchased from the electrical utility over the 2018-19 academic year. Assume the efficiency of the electricity power plant is 35% and the transmission loss from the power plant to campus is 4.5%. 2. Calculate the amount of coal (tons) and natural gas in thousand cubic feet (MCF) that are needed for the electrical utility to generate this much energy assuming the fuel mix provided in table 1 below. Assume the average energy density of the coal is 20 million Btu/ton 2 and the average energy content of 1 cubic foot (cf) of natural gas consumed in Virginia is 1,050 Btu.
