Fresh air is continuously moved through a well-mixed laundry room at a rate of 4000 L/h. The organic matter in a soiled diaper reacts with the chlorine in bleach to form gaseous chloroform. Assume that there is no chloroform present initially in the laundry room. At time 0, ten diapers are being bleached in the laundry room. Each bleached diaper emits chloroform at a rate of 1 mg/min. After 30 min, the diapers are removed from the bleach and are placed into pure water, such that chloroform is no longer being generated. Required:
a. Write the mass balance on chloroform describing the time during which the diapers are being bleached.
b. What is the concentration of chloroform in the effluent of the laundry room (Cost) at t=30min (in ppmv)?
