A horizontal 5-cm-diameter water jet with a velocity of 18 m/s impinges normally upon a vertical plate of mass 1460 kg. The plate rides on a nearly frictionless track and is initially stationary. When the jet strikes the plate, the plate begins to move in the direction of the jet. The water always splatters in the plane of the retreating plate. For simplicity, assume the velocity of the jet is increased as the cart moves such that the impulse force exerted by the water jet on the plate remains constant. Take the density of water as 1000 kg/m3. Determine
(a) the acceleration of the plate when the jet first strikes it (time = 0),
(b) the time it will take for the plate to reach a velocity of 9 m/s, and
(c) the plate velocity 20 s after the jet first strikes the plate. Assume the velocity of the jet relative to the plate remains constant.

Air is to be cooled in the evaporator section of a refrigerator by passing it over a bank of 0.8-cm-outer-diameter and 0.4-m-long tubes inside which the refrigerant is evaporating at -20°c. air approaches the tube bank in the normal direction at 0°c and 1 atm with a mean velocity of 4 m/s. the tubes are arranged in-line with longitudinal and transverse pitches of sl- st 1.5 cm. there are 30 rows in the flow direction with 15 tubes in each row. determine (a) the refrigeration capacity of this system and (b) pressure drop across the tube bank. evaluate the air properties at an assumed mean temperature of -5°c and 1 atm. is this a good assumption?
