A hydropower facility is being planned for construction 5 miles southwest of the town of Winnemucca, Nevada. The water surface of the Lahontan Reservoir will average 75 meters above the tailrace with a riveted steel penstock 300 meters long and a diameter of 1.7 meters. With an average water temperature of 20C, the flow rate provided by the penstock is to be 16m3/s with a combined head loss in the turbine, located slightly more than 3 meters above the tailrace, and draft tube of 2.0 meters and an average velocity in the tailrace of 0.5 m/s. Your role in the planning process is to determine the effective head that will be supplied to the turbine and the amount of power that can be extracted from the system.
