The answer is abolition movement.  This began when people in the North started to question the system of slavery.  When the Industrial Revolution began many people in the North now turned to factories as their source of income.  During period, slavery was no longer practiced there.  Over time they began to criticize the slave system as cruel and inhumane.  Many lobbied for the removal of this system.  Eventually it was one of the reasons for the Civil War.  When slavery was abolished the progressive movement also fought against other issues like rights of women to vote, better working conditions for laborers and crusades against big business.
