In this time, women were often held to the standard's of marriage and social class. Clearly, she felt trapped as a woman, yet she is still to blame for her "recklessness" and for the crime of hitting Tom's mistress with a vehicle (albeit accidentally). Her biggest crime was likely not speaking her own mind and being selfish in her decisions.
