In the middle of the road they enter a cave where they find food, but they were surprised by the return of those who lived there, Cyclops Polyphemus, a giant monster with one eye in the middle of the forehead, who made them prisoners and prepared to eat them all. Ulysses then gave the wine-bottles to the Cyclops, who delighted in him, and in recognition of the tasty gift, he promised the hero that he would devour him last.  While drinking the wine, Polifeno asked the name of Ulysses and he answered that his name was "nobody".

After drinking the wine to the last drop, Polyphemus fell asleep, at which time Ulysses and the companions who had not yet been eaten took advantage to pierce the single eye of the cyclope.
