The Mirabal sisters have become one of the main icons of the resistance against the dictatorship of Trujillo (1930-1961) at Dominican Republic and of the feminist movement. Three of the four sisters were murdered in 1960 by police officers who served the oppresive regime.

The sisters were important political activitists during the dictatorship, were widely known in the country and even were several times in prison for their insurgency. Their popularity within the Dominican society, together with the fact that the number of assassinations, tortures and persecutions against the defectors of the regime had increased at that time, generated an intense reaction in the Dominican society. People asked themselves how many women, mothers, sisters, daughters they would have to see dying for that government and started to question the legimitacy of the ruler. So this change in the minds of many Dominicans has become one of the most important moments in the history of this country and now, even so many years after all happened, the story of the Mirabal Sisters continues to be a symbol of fight against injustices in the Latin American setup .
