in "the bass, the river, and   sheila mant" the young narrator experiences a first date rite of passage. he takes sheila to the cinema by boat. she thinks fishing is stupid, so he hides the fishing rod and misses to catch a large bass. eventually, he regrets letting the bass go after sheila goes back home with another guy.

in the poem "oranges," the teen narrator goes on his first date with a girl. it is winter time, and they walk to the drugstore together. there he buys the girl a chocolate. when they leave, they hold hands, and just release them to open the chocolate and peel the orange the boy has in his pocket.

in my opinion i think it was not excessive at all. the maids turned against the queen in his absence, how could he ever trust them again? if he let them go they would surely spread the news of the suitor's deaths, which is much too risky. as for the suitors, they were selfish, rude, and greedy. the god's had apparently marked them for death, meaning odysseus made their death come faster.
