The theme of the story supported by his actions is the weakness of public morality. Hawthorne shows the corruption existing in a Puritan society giving emphasis on public morality, where the private religious faith is weakened. Goodman Brown decided to come into the forest and meet with the devil. He seems more worried about what people would think of him than facing the devil. His father, grandfather, Goody Cloyse, the minister, Deacon Gookin and Faith are in a league with the devil so Goodman decides to do the same. Hawthorne tries to reveal that moral principles and faith of a society are weak and rootless as the society do not arrive at their own moral decisions.
