In my opinion, Ingrid Jonker uses language effectively to create a sense of a particular time and place in her poem "The Child is not Dead."

This poem addresses a specific event, where children were shot dead by soldiers at Nyanga in the 1960's. The author wants to point that they grow, are present and will be everywhere through "giant journeys through the whole world."

She mentions several places in Africa, as well as settings from the 1960's social context where events like this had an effect (a police station, soldiers on guard, assemblies). Jonker wants to express that despite tragedies commited against children, they will be remembered (by mothers and fathers "who shout Afrika!"). The children who survive will move on "and trek through all Africa".
