   The primary conflict is the distance between mother and daughter caused by the clashing views of how a chess game should be won, implying that mother and daughter can not agree with each other as if they were in a different world. The secondary conflict is what aggravates the distance between them when the mother reiterates her point of view with pride as her predicted outcome happened ( Waverly did win with losing fewer pieces) and this fact bothers the daughter. The behavior of mother and daughter relating to the chess tournaments leads them to conflicts throughout the entire short story.
