This passage is from Wiesel's Night. It takes place near the end of the novel when Wiesel and other Jewish people are being transported from one camp to another. The people are too tired to have any feelings but despair and resignation. The passage does not indicate that they have the energy to be apprehensive or uncertainty. At this point the people have been at the mercy of the Nazis long enough to know that whatever is next can't be good. The description that they "merely waited" shows this resignation. "The dregs of their darkness" left in their souls shows the utter despair of the situation.
