Mao Zedong gave this speech to commemorate the death of Chang Szu-teh, a PLA soldier killed during the Long March. In this speech, he addresses his aims and vision for the Chinese people and the nation as a whole.

In the first paragraph, he encourages the audience by using such words as "battalion, dedicated, liberation" etc. He then moves on to say that everyone makes mistakes, including the Communist party leaders. But then they should be given the chance to rectify their mistakes and help build China a better nation.

Then, he proceeds to give a soliditary speech for the Chinese people, telling them that even though everyone dies, there is always value in how one dies. The significance of a person's death can be known by what causes his death. Here, he is indirectly implying the importance of sacrificing one's life and becoming a patriot for one's country and people.

In the whole speech, Mao emphasized on the patriotic feeling for China. His purpose was to instill courage, patriotism on the men. Implying that whatever actions done during and for the revolution are just and right. And lastly, he implores on every Chinese citizens to be supportive of the revolution.
