The theme of the book is something that is hidden in the story that speaks through its events. While reading the book, we notice the following topics and ideas: humility, coming of age, tolerance of people with disabilities, the transformation of boys into a man during the war. The book keeps repeating the idea that "pride goes before the fall" that prophesies Johnny's accident. This last listed idea may be the most important. All of these ideas I have listed are important in life in general.

Tolerance and constant warnings by elderly and more experienced people speak of universal values, which must be accepted throughout life. Adulthood is a life reality that serves as a tool for achieving these values.

Humility is a way that is especially pronounced at the beginning of the fall, when we face "growing up." Later, it grows into the need and understanding that we are all equal and leads to the acceptance of the true values ​​of life.  All of this is often permeated with unequal struggle as between the American colonies and Britain but as such leads us to achieve true values.

Reading a book helps me by always making it easy for me to think about the book slowly when it's needed. Watching a movie does not allow this.

Examples:

Johnny’s struggles with Lyte and Stranger foreshadows the unequal struggle between the colonies and Britain. This struggles are happening in the world even nowadays.

Johnny’s obsession with the eyes of muskets foreshadows Rab’s death. When we have a strong intuition about something we can not ignore it.
