Create an example of each major sentence structure we have studied: 1. simple 2. compound 3. complex

A simple sentence contains a subject and a verb. It may sometimes be formed with compound subjects and compound verbs.  

Simple sentence

She plays soccer every afternoon.

She and her sister play and enjoy soccer every afternoon.

Compound sentence

A compound sentence is made out of two independent sentences joined by a coordinating conjunction, a semicolon or a phrase. (A comma must be used before the coordinating conjunction. Coordinating conjunctions are: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.

Peter can’t play the guitar, but he plays the piano very well.

They are very special; it is why people love them.

Complex sentence

A complex sentence is formed by the union of one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. To write complex sentences we must use subordinating conjunctions. (When, by, after, before, etc… .)

If the sentence begins with the subordinate, a comma must be used.

After she finished her homework, she went to the movies.

When my family comes, we throw a party.
