In Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth (1623), after Macbeth and Banquo defeat two invading armies, three witches predict that Macbeth will be made Thane of Cawdor and will also become King of Scotland. They also prophesy that Banquo will not be a king but he will be the father of a line of kings. Macbeth becomes the Thane of Cawdor shortly after the witches predict that, which provokes changes in Macbeth's character. He becomes more ambitious and selfish as he starts gaining more power.  Lady Macbeth also contributes to these changes by convincing Macbeth to stab King Duncan while he is sleeping in order for him to become a king. Furthermore, Macbeth's ambition forces him to hire two men to kill Banquo, future father of a line of kings according to the witches' prophecy which makes Macbeth see him as a threat. Eventually, Macbeth ends up committing many crimes, including Lady Macduff's and her younger son's death, and becoming a tyrant and a murderer, which leads him to his own death.
