In the essay “If Black English Isn't a Language, Then Tell Me, What Is?” by James Baldwin (1979), Baldwin argues about the role of the language and how Black English is a true language. In his article, Baldwin also argues that the black diaspora created Black English. By definition, diaspora is the movement of a large group of people from their home country to other countries in the world. Slavery started in 1619 in the British colony of Jamestown, Virginia. As Baldwin explains, large groups of slaves arrived in the United States speaking different languages. They could not speak the other’s language and they needed to communicate. In order to change this, they formed the black church and it was “within this unprecedented tabernacle that black English began to be formed”.
