In the poem, "I Understand the Large Hearts of Heroes," Whitman lists heroes who are dead.  Specifically, he lists women, infants, the sick, and men.  For women he mentions, “lank [limp] loose-gown’d women.  For infants he mentions “silent old-faced infants.”  For the sick he mentions, “lifted sick.”  And, for men he mentions, “sharp-lipp’d unshaven men.”  While Whitman doesn’t specifically state they are dead, this can be discerned from how he describes them as the dead would be lank, silent, needing to be lifted, and unshaven with stretched lips that appear “sharp.”

alright, so here, the author clearly thinks that flooding the canyon was a bad idea and is showing bias against it.
