The country was going through the Cold War, which was a prolonged period of tense relations between the United States and the Soviet Union which started after the Second World War and ended with the fall of the Soviet Union in 1992.

President Kennedy encouraged the citizens to don't have fear, as the country's struggle against communism will continue until it is no longer a menace for the world. he also encourages the people who have the overall welfare of the country in mind in his famous phrase "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country".
