In the novel "Things Fall Apart," colonization plays an extremely significant role. The title of the novel echoes this idea, as the Igbo society "fell apart" with the arrival of the English. The Igbo society was not perfect before the colonizers arrived. In fact, it had several weaknesses, in particular in relation to the internal divisions of the society. As the people are not unified, they struggled to resist the wave of change that comes over them in the form of a new government, new religion and new traditions. However, Achebe highlights the fact that resistance to colonialism was weak not because of the benefits of colonialism, or because of the simplicity of the African mind. Instead, the African people were victims of their own complex society.
