contact with european cultures brought great changes to the native american tribes of north america. many of these changes were harmful to the native americans. between 1539 and 1542, hernando de soto explored the southeastern part of the united states. he fought many of the native americans there. however, diseases brought by the europeans killed many of the native americans in 1830, president andrew jackson signed the indian removal act. this policy forced many native americans living in the eastern part of the united states to move. they had to relocate to areas west of the mississippi river.

Read the excerpt from martin luther king jr.’s "i have a dream” speech. and so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of new hampshire. let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of new york. let freedom ring from the heightening alleghenies of pennsylvania. let freedom ring from the snow-capped rockies of colorado. let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of california. but not only that: let freedom ring from stone mountain of georgia. let freedom ring from lookout mountain of tennessee. let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of mississippi. from every mountainside, let freedom ring. the most likely reason king uses allusions in this part of his speech is to share his knowledge of american geography. compare northern and southern destinations. remind listeners about small-town accountability. encourage listeners to envision freedom everywhere.

Read this excerpt from "the light of gandhi's lamp" by hilary kromberg inglis, in which she describes driving to the police station where her sister is being detained. to avoid looking at the blackened windows at the top of the building and thinking about the history of who had died or been tortured there, i always looked instead at the little chinese restaurant on the opposite side of the road. how does this passage affect the text? it conveys, with great subtlety, the conflict she felt over having a sister who would break the law and end up in the custody of the police. it conveys, without any implied moral judgment, that those who fought against apartheid considered themselves to be soldiers in a just war. it conveys, with an extended metaphor, the idea that being detained by the police in this society was regarded as a badge of honor. it conveys, with direct language, the view held by many anti-apartheid activists that the police often acted in brutal and unlawful ways.
