toni morrison is an american novelist, essayist, editor, teacher and professor emeritus.
toni morrison was chole anthony wofford and she was born in february 18, 1931 in lorain, ohio. she was the second oldest of four children. her father named, george wofford worked primarily as a welder but also had several jobs at once to support the family. ohio after her parents moved to the north to escape the problems of southern racism.

toni morrison graduated from lorain high school with honors in 1949. in addition, in 1949 toni morrison entered howard university in washington, d. c it was one of america’s most distinguished black college. she received her b. a in english in 1953 and she complete her master of arts in english from cornell university in 1955. toni morrison was appointed as an english instructor at texas southern university in 1955 as well. she worked at texas southern university for two years before returning to howard in 1957 to teach english. by 1964 toni morrison was married harold morrison and had two children. however, during 1964 toni morrison and harold morrison got in divorce and she moved to new york city to work as a textbook editor. later on, she found work as an editor at the new york city headquarters of random house.
when toni morrison worked as an editor she played a vital role in bringing back black literature into the mainstream by editing books by prominent black authors like henry dumas, angela davis and gayl jones. she joined an informal group of writers and poets who held meetings where they discussed their work. toni morrison wrote a short story of one such discussion that revolved around an african girl who wished to have blue eyes. she expanded the story into her debut novel, ‘the bluest eye’ in 1970.

her next novel ‘sula’ published in 1973 was about the friendship between two girls in a black neighborhood and how their friendship evolves and changes over time. another novel toni morrison wrote was “song of solomon” in 1977 she told of the life of macon “milkman” dead iii, an african american male. the book traces his life from birth to adulthood. this book was chosen for oprah winfrey’s popular book club. she was appointed to the albert schweitzer chat the university of albany in 1984 and held the robert f goheen chair in the humanities at the princeton university from 1989 until her retirement in 2006.
her 1977 novel “song of solomon” is one of her major novels. the book not only won the national books critics award but was also cited by the swedish academy in awarding her the nobel prize in literature.
toni morrison published her best known novel called “beloved” in 1987. the novel was set in post civil war american and dealt with the story of an african american slave margaret garner who temporarily escaped slavery before being recaptured.
during the 1990’s she wrote two novels. one of the novels was a historical novel called “jazz” in 1992 and a novel about gender and classed called “paradise” in in 1997. toni morrison was selected by the national endowment for the humanities for the jefferson lecture in 1996. the lecture is u. s federal government’s highest honor for achievement in the humanities. toni morrison also wrote the english libretto for the opera “margaret garner” in 2005. she had previously based her novel “beloved” on the life of the runaway slave margaret garner. this opera too was based on the same woman.
