How has skeeter’s life become duplicitous? is society only to blame for her dilemma, or could she have been more forthright once she realized the injustice experienced by the maids?

There are two questions in this post, so I will enumerate the answers to prevent any misunderstandings.

1) How has Skeeter's life become duplicitous? Skeeter's life has become duplictous or deceitful because she finds herself being pulled by two different forces and tries cope with both of them: On the one hand, her morals and values tell her that she has to help the cause of the maids and also pursue her dreams of becoming a journalist. On the other hand, she wants to have a healthy relationship with her mother and fit in the society she knows (which is why she goes to the soccer  party and remains silent through the verbal abuse of Hilly towards her maid.)

2) Is society only to blame for her dilemma, or could she have been more forthright once she realized the injustice experienced by the maids? Despite Skeeter's love for her maid Constantine and her father's legacy of "treat colored people equally", Skeeter is at first reluctant to speak against the humilliation and abuse of the maids. When Hilly humilliates Abigail in front of her friends, Skeeter does not defend Abigail. Also, she does not publicly protest against the toilet initiative, instead she plays dumb until she can't feign anymore. Also, she decides to take on Abigail son's project without consulting Abigail first, motivated by selfish purposes (to be acknowledged by Stein and have a chance to work for her): it is only after hearing the testimonies of the maids that she realizes that their book could make a difference.
