The climax of the story is when the couple, Jim and Delia Young, discovers that they have both sacrificed their most beloved and valued personal possessions to buy gifts for each other. Delia sells her hair to buy a silver watch fob for Jim; while Jim sells his precious silver antique watch to buy tortoiseshell combs for Delia's hair. The gifts they give no longer have any used, except to symbolize the depth of their love and willingness to make sacrifices for each other.

"The Gift of the Magi" is a short story William Sydney Porter, better known for his pen name, O. Henry, and it was published in 1905. It narrates the love story of a young couple who go to all lengths, even sacrifice what is most valuable materially to them, in order to show their love for the other. Although in their attempt to give the other beautiful gifts to show their love, they become useless as the two of them sacrified something that was needed in order for the gifts to be useful. But the moral of the story is the immense love that the two have, which is their most precious treasure and gift, and which is a representation of the true gift of the Magi from the Bible.

The climax of this story starts precisely in page 4, when Jim, the husband, steps into their home and comes face to face with what his wife has done. There is a strange look on his face that scares Della, the wife, and from there, the climax of the discovery of what has been done by both of them to acquire valuable presents for the other, becomes revealed. But that moment of tension, when Jim sees the hair, and Della becomes nervous about his reaction, becomes the crux, as we also come to the height of expectation as to whether the relationship will be damaged, or not. Then, things start to change when Jim says: "I want you to understand me Dell," he said. "Nothing like a haircut could make me love you any less, but if you´ll open that, you may know what I felt when I came in." Wiith this statement, we start to know that what Della thought might happen, of Jim not loving her because of her change in appearance, is unfounded. We also come to learn about why he reacted how he did.

After this pinnacle, we start to hear how Jim also made his own sacrifice, selling his watch to buy Della the combs that she so wanted, and then the two realize that, at least for now, their gifts are totally useless. But what comes to the forefront is that the two of them discover not the price of their independent gifts, or how much they cost, but rather, the invaluable treasure they have, with their love, which is the true gift of the Magi in the story of the Bible. Love, was their most precious gift to one another.
