maddy is excited about learning to swim. she had been faking it for too long. she could splash around the shallow end, but her friends preferred games of tag in the diving well. she could not manage that.

the class description says it is a "strokes class for any age." it sounded perfect. maddy was ready to stretch herself into an impressive freestyle. soon she'd tackle breaststroke. she knew she could do it with a little .

the classes were lining up, and as maddy tugged on a bathing cap, she realized from afar that none of the swimmers was over four years old. each of them was with a mom or dad; some were even being carried.

when the first student was called, he jumped in and demonstrated a back float. the next student cannonballed her way into the pool.

maddy retreated behind the snack machine. she backed against the wall.

"is maddy jefferson here? " an instructor called.
silence hovered over the shallow end.

why doesn't maddy join the lesson?

because she is too shy to talk to the instructor
because she is too proud to learn with younger kids
because she is unwilling to swim in the shallow end
because she is unable to do a cannonball by herself
