An aspect of Virginia Woolf’s background that reveals her purpose in writing A Room of ones Own is she supported feminist ideas.

The rewards that the men of that class were rewarded and Virginia's brothers were advantaged, she was denied such opportunities. Her family felt that they could not afford to send her college. Her family considered that girls are supposed to get married and be with her husband. Girls at that time had an opportunity to earn degrees from Cambridge and Oxford. Such disadvantages made her angry especially being the brilliant one in her family.

Therefore, Virginia in her essay argues that women have fewer opportunities which hinder their growth and absolutely no privacy. Hence, she cites the example of Jane Austen how she was interrupted while she used to write in her dining room. Such instances provoke the idea of having Room of own and to have the same experience as that of men.
