Henrik Ibsen's play "A Doll's House" is about the woman's position in the society and family, especially in Norway of the mid nineteenth century. The play may be openly dealing with the marriage of the characters Nora and Torvald but it also at the same time deals with the societal issue of a housewife in a patriarchal society.

The play shows the 'husband-wife' equation as the perfect way of how it should be. Nora represents the dutiful and submissive, loving wife while Torvald is the earning, head of the family. He is the symbol of what a husband should be, going out everyday, earning for the family, while the wife is expected to stay at home and look after the household. Also, the wife depends on her husband for making decisions. But aside from the small picture of this 'husband-wife equilibrium', the play also deals with the larger picture of the institution of marriage as a whole in the Norwegian society of the 19th century. The women are expected to be obedient, dependent on their husbands for anything, and the roles of husband and wife being confined in their separate boxes. The men seems to have major control over the whole household, with the fate of a married woman dependent on the husband. In a male dominated society, women like Nora are expected to simply give in to their husbands, and whatever decisions they need making, should be in consultation with the men.
