He manipulated two killers to get rid of Banquo, blaming him for all their misfortunes.

For his plan to succeed, he called Banquo to the palace and asked about his travel plans. He needed to know so that the hired murderers will be able to strike him at the exact time. He then told Banquo that he had organised a dinner in his honor so he should come for that. Banquo said he will and left for his journey. Then, Macbeth told the men to make sure they kill Banquo and let him know at the dinner so that he will publicly mourn the death of his dear friend. He himself couldn't do the deed as he and Banquo have common friends which will make it complicated. But if he is seen grieving openly, the everyone will come to like him.
