Iwas only 15 years old in april of 1861 when president lincoln made the call for volunteers. of course, i was too young to take up a soldier’s gun, but oh, how i wanted to sign on and serve! there i was, caught in those years halfway between a boy and a man. the boy part of me wanted the adventure of it all. it wanted to see the world beyond kentucky in a powerful way.
