Analyze the theme of disillusionment in fitzgerald’s "winter dreams."

THE THEME OF DISILLUSIONMENT IN FITZGERALD'S WINTER DREAMS:

The theme of disillusionment has been brought to the fore through the character of Dexter Greene who rises to the zenith of material satisfaction when he attains his financial goals. However, he suffers disillusionment when he associates ideal with Judy , an embodiment of beauty, who he thinks is a representative of the elite class as all men of the upper class society desire her.

Judy is flirtatious so she keeps moving on till her expectations seem to get fulfilled. Dexter comes to know that she has married a rich man who drinks and stays merry enjoying company outside the house leaving Judy alone at home with children. This is not what Dexter had expected.

This shatters his illusion of ideal. It is also seen shattering when he goes out on a date with Judy who is dressed up in a plain attire contrary to his expectations. Also, his material attainment fails to provide him happiness. This also leads to disillusionment.
