The word media refers to any channel of communication, from printed paper to digital data. It includes news, educational content, art, and other forms of information spread by the means of mass communication (broadcasting, publishing, and the Internet).

A media piece is any piece conveying a certain message to the public this way. Understanding the intended audience of a media piece can help us understand its purpose and meaning. Good example of this is propaganda posters from the Second World War. These posters always spread a certain idea, and to fully understand it, we have to know their audience (e.g. workers, soldiers, women).
